Blog Tour and Giveaway: Blackheath by Gabriella Lepore

Book Blurb:

Seventeen-year-old Maggie Ellmes is dogged by a case of chronic bad luck. She figures that’s just her lot in life—that is, until the psychic at Blackheath’s annual carnival reveals that Maggie’s problems are caused by more than just ordinary misfortune; she’s actually been cursed.

Desperate to shake the hex, Maggie has no choice but to seek out the help of Joel Tomlins, a rebellious classmate who’s descended from Blackheath’s most powerful line of witches. After breaking all of his coven’s conventions to help her, Joel discovers that the curse isn’t as bad as Maggie fears. In fact, it’s much, much worse.

My Review:

4 Out Of 5 Stars

Genre: Mystery, Romance, Supernatural, Teen, Witches--

Everyone knows the Tomlins are witches, it's a fact. Maggie knows it, even if she has never see any of them in action, especially Joel, who use to be her friend.Maggie finds herself cursed through no fault of her own, so she seeks out Joel to help her fix it. Joel is intrigued by Maggie and how she sees him, but he refuses to admit he may kinda, sorta like her just a little, but he agrees to help her anyway. Together the two of them must battle an unknown force, an attraction that neither wants and general life disasters.

I will admit that I was drawn to the book because the cover is so pretty. I am guilty of judging a book by it's cover, and this was found to be a must read. Well, I am happy to report that I absolutely fell in love with this book. Disclaimer here, I am not sure the cover ties into the actual story, but both won me over so whatever. I was a little cautious when I began the book, and the strange naming of the characters like quite old aunt something, moderately old aunt such-and-such, and blonde Lauren. I was slightly taken aback by it, but grew to love the odd names and strange characters. By the end of the story, I was completely won over by this quirky, humorous, odd romantic tale.

The book alternates between Maggie and Joel, both main characters with distinct voices and personalities, and I can say in all truth that I loved both of them. Joel is such a good big brother, I loved watching his interactions with Pippin and him trying to work through his loss with Evan. He is this intriguing attractive man-child, who seems to oblivious to his appeal and has struggled with fitting in and the abandonment from his parents. Maggie is completely on her own, living in the boarding house with her makeshift family of her best friend and the awful Joyless, yet still can find things to be happy and well adjusted. I loved her outlook on things, and how she saw others and the world in general. I loved Joel and Maggie together, be it friendly, bickering, or romantic, they were very dynamic.

I really enjoyed this story and would love to be able to come visit this world and these people again. The writing flowed well and it was a very quick read for me, because of the writing and because I loved the story. I was surprised by the subtle humor in the story as well, but I am a huge fan of humor anywhere (even inappropriately). I can't wait to read more from the author.

I received this title from the author and Xpresso Book Tours in return for my honest review.
