Blog Tour: Soulless (The Immortal Gene #1) by Jacinta Maree

Book Blurb:

Welcome to Soulless. We are the generation that laughs at death.

Reincarnation; what was once considered a gift of immortality has become an eternity of nightmares.

Nadia Richards lives in a world plagued by reincarnation, a system of recycling souls where all past memories, personalities and traumatic events are relived daily in disjointed sequences. Trapped within their own warped realities, not even the richest and most powerful are saved from their own minds unraveling. Madness is the new human nature, and civilizations are crumpling beneath themselves trying to outrun it.

Within a society that ignores death, Nadia appears to be the one exception to the reincarnation trap. Born without any reincarnated memories and with printless eyes, the hot tempered 19 year old quickly becomes the ultimate prize to all those wishing to end the vicious cycle, or for some, to ensure they could evade death forever.

My Review:

4 Out Of 5 Stars

Genre: Dystopian, Survival, Mystery--

When someone is born, they have an imprint on their iris that is used to track who they were in a previous life, cataloging them for the government and determining if they need to be punished for past sins. When a person reaches a certain age, the memories of who they had been return and can cause madness unless a drug is administered, usually reserved for the wealthy and important though. Nadia is considered abnormal and odd due to the fact she has never experienced any past life memories, has no mark in her iris and actually feels for other people, unlike the detachment most people have. She has been seen by her local doctor for years, when she gets picked up during a routine scan for curfew violators and is thrown in prison for not being able to be scanned. Nadia is a pawn for something much larger than anything she could imagine and she must fight for her life.

There is so much going on here. Almost overwhelmingly so. I expected to pick up a teen dystopian novel with mild violence and some love. But that was not what I got. I was drawn in by the pretty cover, which I can honestly say in no way reflected what the book was about (except maybe the gas mask part). This was a dark gritty story dealing with violence, death, murder, torture, survival, cannibalism, insanity, detachment, prostitution, betrayal and pain. Every negative emotion was given a spot light in the story. And this was no teen book either, it was geared to an older reader and the main characters were in their 20s. Even after saying that the book was dark, I was still intrigued by it. At times I was caught up in this terrible world where death means nothing and people are expected to go crazy. Other times I found myself shaking my head at Nadia, uncertain how she had made it this far when at times she seems to be missing common sense.

This was one of those books where it is probably in your best interest not to get too attached to anyone because nobody is safe, death lurks ever so near. Even Nadia, the main character battled her fair share of torture and near doom moments that made me cling to the edge of my seat and hope for some sort of positive resolution. Another thing I found intriguing that the author was able to pull off was the relationship dynamic between Nadia and Diesel. It was a violent survival bond that bloomed into something so much more than that. I experienced so many different emotions right along with Nadia focused on Diesel- disgust, fear, hatred, need, companionship, friendship, loyalty, responsibility, even a strange romantic spark. Diesel is hands down by far the most complex character that I have ever seen, he is such a whirlwind of motivations and actions I could never predict what would come next and it was intriguing. I think the two of them could also be the image in the dictionary for “Co-dependency”. Unhealthy, most certainly, but interesting none the less (honestly, nothing about this book could be called healthy, more like “run for your life we are all going to die” type situations). This is the first time that I rooted for a legitimately crazy character to enter a relationship because I wanted to see what would happen next. Yes it was messed up, but it had me coming back for more every time.

I had a hard time getting into the story, but once I did, I was so into the story I could not find my way out if I wanted to. And the ending! What a twist, which confirms that I need the next book pretty much now so I can see what direction the story will go next. I was afraid I was going to read the same old overdone dystopian, but I can honestly say that was not what this turned out to be.

I received this title from the author in return for my honest review.

  2. Great review! I love it when all the characters are in danger - that's the sign of a dark, and often emotional read which is right up my alley! Glad you liked it, Katherine! :)
